Teaching & Learning Strategies: Lectures / Tutorials / Practicals/ Group Crits/ Group Discussion/ Student Presentations including presentations to an external examiner. There are no set projects in the award year rather the student decides on a plan of work that articulates the primary concerns of their art practice with the tutorial staff and this is signed off by both parties. The learning strategy is characterized as “learning through doing” in that the student is guided and supported through the process of skills acquisition and creative conceptualization both as individual students and as a class. Students are expected to display a high degree of self motivation and organization in the pursuit of the objectives of the learning plan. The majority of learning will take place in the student’s individual studio. The project tutor will flag assessment priorities throughout the development of the year, an emphasis on experimentation, innovation and problem solving is a notable feature of this year. There will also be an opportunity for the visiting lecture programme to participate in the delivery of this module.
Module Aim: This major module in painting and 2D visual media spans 30 weeks of learning with the aim of the student managing a specialised and personal engagement with the making of painting/2D visual media. The student is expected to identify conceptual intentions specific to their own practice. The module aims to facilitate and support the student in establishing an autonomous and self-directed art practice. The aims of this subject are: To equip the student with the necessary skills and conceptual awareness to research and execute works in a fully professional manner; To deepen a self-reliant work ethic; To apply theory critically to analyse professional experience; To give emphasis to the importance of a self-reflective form of critical engagement and to develop self-assessment skills; To encourage a sophisticated individual and personalized approach in making painting, 2D media; To embed the practice of experimentation and pushing the boundaries of painting, 2D media; To impart the importance of learning from mistakes in the creative process; To create a major exhibition of the student’s work in a fully professional context.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Be able to demonstrate specialized knowledge pertaining to specific theories, concepts and methodology in contemporary painting and 2D visual media through (a) Presentation of a substantial body of creative work that synthesise theories, practices and personal research (b) Oral presentation in 2 formal review interviews that considers inter-dependencies of meaning between intention, content, form and the reception of the artwork (c) Presentation of workbooks, visual diaries, research and writing containing personal reflection. (d) Demonstration of a thorough knowledge of health and safety standards
LO2 Be able to demonstrate a detailed sophisticated understanding of specific critical questions and challenges that apply to the current boundaries of the field of painting and 2D visual media through (a) Presentation of studio work in progress. (b) Participating in seminars through discussion and debate (c) Exchanging thoughts, knowledge and ideas in discussions with tutors

Indicative Content
Painting & 2D Visual Media
The student designs the course of studio practice for the year in consultation with their tutors. This subject of study is the culmination of the course and students are expected to adopt as professional an approach as possible towards the completion of a single body of work for public exhibition. This body of work should be innovative, experimental and creative and reflect on contemporary debates and issues in contemporary art. This course of study will be supported by the invitation of specific external lecturers in specialisms explicit to the students work. Tutorials and peer group seminars will provide a supportive, professional and constructive forum for sharing ideas.
Reflective writing
Students are asked to create a year journal in 2 parts that contain written reflections on their journey in 4th year, it should also contain images and references to influential artists related to their practice.
Professional Practice
Students will participate in an open studio where peers and other students are invited in to see their work in progress. Students are also asked to make a formal presentation about their future career once graduated.

Other Each student will have a formal review interview at the end of a semester and/or module and a report and mark will be filed by the lecturer. The two reports and marks will be the basis for a summative continuous assessment mark. Project Public Exhibition: The Exhibition will be assessed by at least 3 members of faculty. An external examiner will also assess the process and final exhibition.
