Teaching & Learning Strategies: Work placement enhances the student’s learning through practical first hand experience in the work place. Organising their own placement, learning to interact with staff members and customers will encourage the student to engage in the hospital or community pharmacy and learn work-related practical skills
Module Aim: Students will have gained knowledge, skills and competencies required to work as pharmacy technicians in either community or hospital pharmacies.

On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Describe and demonstrate the responsibility of working with prescriptions, medicines and patients.
LO2 Demonstrate theoretical knowledge in practice while working under supervision in a real environment.
LO3 Transfer and apply skills from the academic to work environment.
LO4 Understand and explain when to refer to pharmacist or senior staff member.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
26 x 32 hour weeks or equivalent from June to December (may be split between hospital and community if tutors agree) 40 x 8 hour days may be worked outside of Ireland, provided the placement is supervised by a suitable qualified and registered pharmacist and has been approved by IT Carlow. Extra work may be carried out during term-time if students have difficulty finding a full-time placement.

Project Students are required to submit a work placement diary at the end of their placement. Diary exercises must be completed while in the work environment. Competency sheets must be completed by the tutor during placement. Regular contact will be maintained between work placement coordinator and pharmacy tutors to monitor student’s progress during the completion of this module. Students must make a presentation midway through module and submit 2000 word report at the end of the module. Students may be required to work extra days if the skill levels achieved are not considered appropriate as agreed by the work placement tutor, placement coordinator and programme board. 1,2,3,4 100.00 Sem 1 End
