Stage 1 / Semester 2

Elective Regulation
In order to progress to stage 2 of the programme, learners must achieve all three components of Supervised Professional Practice 1 (SPP1), These components are i) Minimum 80% attendance at SPP1 workshops in semesters 1 and 2; ii) Participation in 20 hours of professional practice, comprised of field trip(s) and virtual placement tasks; iii) A mark of not less than 40% in the SPP1 portfolio. In line with the provision of year-long modules (within both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes) of at least 10 credits. *Supervised Professional Practice 1 module will be assessed upon completion of semester 2, but preparation workshops will take place in semester 1 and 2. Learners who do not achieve some or all of the SPP1 components shall be provided with one repeat opportunity in the next academic year, where IT Carlow is satisfied with the learner's preparedness and fitness to do so. Learners may EXIT at this stage of the programme with a Level 6 Minor Award, Certificate in Education in Introduction to Early Childhood Studies (Embedded Exit Award), provided they have achieved the required learning outcomes and have accumulated 60 credits. Stage 2 / Semester 1

Elective Regulation
Block Supervised Professional Practice 2 (SPP2) of 400 hours must be completed. In order to progress to Stage 3 of the programme, learners must achieve all three components of SPP2. These components are i) Minimum 80% attendance at SPP2 workshops; ii) A ‘Pass’ in relation to professional practice performance; iii) A mark of not less than 40% in the SPP2 portfolio. Ed. in Early Childhood Education and Practice, learners must achieve all three components of SPP3. These components are i) Minimum 80% attendance at SPP3 workshops; ii) A ‘Pass’ in relation to professional practice performance; iii) A mark of not less than 40% in the SPP3 portfolio. Learners who do not achieve some or all of the SPP3 components shall be provided with one repeat opportunity in the next academic year, where IT Carlow is satisfied with the learner’s fitness and preparedness to do so. 2. Elective Regulation
1. Each learner will be allocated a supervisor for their research thesis. 2. In line with the provision of year-long research projects (within both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes) of at least 10 credits, the thesis will be submitted upon completion of semester 2 but research teaching classes will continue over the academic year. 3. In order to be eligible to achieve the B. Ed. (Honours) in Early Childhood Education and Practice, learners must have 240 credits, must complete a block of 100 hours for Alternatives in Professional Practice (APP), and must achieve all three components of the APP Module. The components are i) Minimum 80% attendance at APP workshops in semester 2; ii) A ‘Pass’ in relation to professional practice performance; iii) A mark of at least 40% in the APP portfolio. Learners who do not achieve some or all of the APP components shall be provided with one repeat opportunity in the next academic year, where IT Carlow is satisfied with the learner’s fitness and preparedness to do so.
