Teaching & Learning Strategies: This module will be taught in one theory classe of one hour duration and two one hour practicals per week throughout the year. The theory class will include lecture, Q&A, group discussion, PowerPoint presentation and CD-Rom support where appropriate. The practical work will comprise one hour of body conditioning and core stability training and one hour of circuit training, involving both master classes and student teaching. The primary focus will be on developing students’ practical skills and confidence in exercise instruction and programme planning.
Module Aim: The aim of this module is to provide students with core instructional skills in the area of exercise and fitness with a view to becoming safe and effective exercise and fitness instructors

On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Display a basic level of competency with regard to exercise demonstration and instruction.
LO2 Understand the principles of training and their application to the health related components of fitness in designing basic exercise programmes
LO3 Understand the benefits of choosing a healthy and active lifestyle
LO4 Explain the principles of training in relation to special population groups.

Indicative Content
Instructional skills in:
Movement preparation and core stability training: relevant anatomy; activation cues; instruction in core stability exercises; basic mat-work and progressions; movement analysis; warm ups and cool downs; flexibility (types of stretching and their practical application) Circuit training: circuit types (aerobic, anaerobic, LME, mixed, flexibility, sport-specific); instruction of various circuits - design, layout and sequencing of exercises, exercise demonstration and instruction; screening, warm-up and safety; basic resistance exercises and floorwork. Resistance Training (Introduction): safety in weights room, warm-up, basic resistance exercises; teaching cues and safety points for each exercise, identification of technique error and correction
