Teaching & Learning Strategies: This module will be delivered as 12 x 2 hour lectures and 12 x 1 hour practical classes. To scaffold this learning, a wide range of resources will be available on Blackboard (including international guidelines, practice tools, discussion boards and reflective diaries). Students will be expected to access this material prior to the theory classes. The primary purpose of the lectures will be to ensure consistent understanding of material, to correct any inaccuracies, apply theory to practice and to facilitate learning through problem solving, collaboration and discussion. Students will also be provided with opportunities to discuss their individual experience of this area of practice, and to collaborate with other students to ensure the practical application of material across a range of pharmacy contexts and explore a range of scenarios and case studies. Practical classes will address essential practical skills and competencies. These will include the assessment and dispensing of relevant prescriptions to facilitate compliance with legislative requirements, development of consultation skills and other essential communication skills to facilitate effective medicines management and optimise patient outcomes. Students will complete a suicide awareness/prevention programme.
Module Aim: To provide students with the knowledge, skills and competencies [relevant to this therapeutic area] required to: Promote mental health awareness and wellness, Consistently provide a safe, effective and patient-centred pharmacy service for people with mental health conditions and their carers and families, Collaborate with a range of health providers in managing patient care and optimizing outcomes.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate a good range of knowledge and understanding about the most commonly used psychiatric medicines in order to deal with basic medicine information queries and dispense prescriptions under supervision in accordance with legislation, in either a community pharmacy or hospital dispensary.
LO2 Advise and direct patients regarding access to appropriate psychiatric assistance or support networks.
LO3 Develop and maintain a mental health care service in either community pharmacy, a hospital or anywhere psychiatric medicines are being supplied and apply the requirements of the Mental Health Act 2001 to a pharmacy environment.
LO4 Promote positive mental health, actively support persons with a mental illness, their families and carers and provide help and support for patients with thoughts of suicide.

Theory:
The main risk factors, signs/symptoms and outlook/prognosis for a variety of mental health conditions, including but not limited to: eating disorders, anxiety, dipolar disorders, depression, schizophrenia.

How mental health conditions are diagnosed and challenges/barriers to diagnosis.

Treatment protocols and medications used to treat a range of mental health conditions, including dosing schedules, monitoring requirements, side effects and drug/drug interactions..

An overview of the organisation of the different mental health services in Ireland and routes of access for patients/service users of all ages (including children and older people).

An overview of reliable sources of information, support networks and advocacy groups available to help patients, families and carers experiencing mental health difficulties.
