Module Aim: The aims of the subject are: 1. Health and Safety (a) To develop the learners’ knowledge of Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis related to the design and construction of a film set, stage production and similar situations. (b) To develop the learners’ knowledge of current Health and Safety Legislation as relevant to the responsibility and roles of the design and construction team members and all persons working on the film set or stage production, etc. (c) Health and safety issues relating to special effects, armoury, stunt coordination, pyrotechnics and other special project related events 2. Insurance and Litigation (a) To understand the types of insurances required by the film and theatre industry (b) Controlling potential litigation issues (c) Indemnity and insurance for effects, stunts, filming abroad and other special project related events. 3. Fire and Mobility (a) To develop the learners’ knowledge of basic fire evacuation procedures in relation to ever changing film and theatre sets. (e) To examine the impact of the building on the users and occupants in relation to universal accessibly. 4. Employee Wellbeing (a) To examine the impact of the building on the users and occupants in relation to health and wellbeing. (b) To examine mental wellbeing awareness specifically related to filming issues. (c) Managing welling being, workplace bullying and harassment and conflict management.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Can explain key concepts and apply knowledge of Health & Safety Legislation, Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment in relation to the design, construction and maintenance of a film set, stage production and similar situations.
LO2 Can explain key concepts and apply a basic knowledge of the practical skills needed and the risk factors involved relating to the areas of special effects, armoury, stunt coordination, pyrotechnics, and other special project related events.
LO3 Develop an understanding of the complex nature of indemnity and insurance for a range of productions and events.
LO4 Can interpret fire related codes of practice and Part B of the Building Regulations and apply knowledge in relation to safe working with fire and hot work and firefighting methods and equipment.
LO5 Can explain key concepts and apply knowledge of the impact of the layout, design and management of film and theatre sets on the users in relation to universal accessibly, basic fire evacuation procedures and user health and wellbeing.

Film, TV and Events Health and Safety
Health and safety issues relevant to productions. Issues around pyrotechnics, special effects, armoury and stunt coordination.
Health and Safety for the Film and Theatre Sets
(a) Health and Safety Legislation, (b) Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment specific to film and theatre sets (c) roles and duties of the set/stage design, construction and maintenance team, (d) Personal health and safety
Insurance and Litigation
(a) basics of insurance coverage (b) types of insurance (c) Who needs to be insured and exemptions from coverage (d) unions (e) How to indemnify a range of productions. For example, controls and risk assessments for special FX, filming abroad, conflict situations, etc.
Basic Fire Evacuation Procedures
(a) The psychology of fire emergencies / people reactions to fire scenarios, (b) Responsibilities and duties of evacuation fire management, marshals and sweep teams (c) The main requirements of a fire evacuation route (d) Basic fire fighting equipment - fire extinguishers, fire blankets, smoke and heat detectors, fire alarms, sprinklers, smoke extraction systems, etc. (e) Hot Work (f) Pyrotechnics and specialised working with fire requirements (g) BLEVEs (h) on location shoots related fire issues
Mobility and Access for All
(a) TGD Part M (b) building space, film sets and stage layout design for disabled users in relation to equipment installation, stairs, ramps, lifts and escalators, etc.
Wellbeing
(a) Mental wellbeing awareness – freelance, working in isolation, fluctuating industry / irregular hours, on location shoots – away from family and friends for long periods, (b) Dealing with feelings of anxiety or depression or stress (c) Ways to improve work-life balance (d) Managing workplace bullying and harassment (e) Conflict management
