Teaching & Learning Strategies: This module will be taught in three theory classes of one hour duration and the equivalent of a two hour practical class per week. Classes may take the form of formal lectures or tutorial-type sessions. A range of teaching techniques will be used as appropriate, including worksheets, PowerPoint and other presentations. Factual material presented at theory classes will be reinforced, discussed and developed during practical classes.
Module Aim: The aim of this module is to impart and expand knowledge of basic biochemical processes, systems and structures, including practical applications and the performance of practical biochemical analysis with due regard to Health and Safety.

On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Describe the structures, properties and relevant reactions of major biochemical molecules.
LO2 Outline the major metabolic pathways and explain how metabolism is controlled
LO3 Carry out basic biochemical techniques with due regard to safety in the laboratory

Basic Biochemical concepts
The cell system, water, buffers. Structure and Function of Bio-molecules
Amino Acids and Proteins
Classification, structure, function, polymerisation, and introduction to basic protein analysis.
Classification, mode of action, factors influencing activity and introduction to kinetics
Classification, structure and functions of glucose, starch, glycogen and cellulose. Non-starch polysaccharides.
Lipids and the lipid bilayer
The structure and functions of simple, complex and derived lipids. The Phospholipid bilayer. Ion gradients and ion selective channels and transport.
Fat-soluble and water –soluble vitamins; structure and function, deficiency states.
Macrominerals and trace minerals, biochemical role of minerals.
Metabolism and Bioenergetics
Introduction to metabolism and metabolic pathways and the control of metabolism. Glycolysis and gluconeogenesis. Introduction to citric acid cycle, the electron transfer chain and β-oxidation
Initially students will have practicals covering an introduction to the Biochemistry laboratory and the Health &Safety regulations and requirements, followed by a laboratory class using relevant calculations and dilutions. Subsequent practicals will develop skills in the use of biochemical equipment and techniques including the use of pH meters and UV spectrophotometers, basic biochemical extractions, separations and assays and the determination of enzyme activity
