Teaching & Learning Strategies: Objectives for experience and learning while on placement will be set out in advance. The Supervisor and Student will be furnished with a placement booklet; including a list of student competencies, the student code of conduct while on placement and the assessment procedures. Regular contact between the placement co-ordinator, supervisor and student will serve to discuss progress, problems and solutions. Business Skills will be taught in term 1 as 1 hour theory per week for 15 weeks. Business skills will incorporate case studies and role-playing, class discussion and feedback, and audiovisual and studio techniques.
Module Aim: To enable the student to apply and consolidate knowledge, skills, techniques and competencies acquired during the academic programme in a supervised relevant work environment. To facilitate the student to gain insight into the role of a sports rehabilitator/athletic therapist and how to work as one.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Apply his/her current knowledge base through practical experience.
LO2 Demonstrate enhanced practical skills of assessment, treatment and rehabilitation with their implementation under the supervision of a clinical supervisor
LO3 Demonstrate critical and creative abilities to assess injuries, measure components of function, prioritise problems and justify treatments
LO4 Manage a large caseload of patients with varying injuries.
LO5 Understand the knowledge required in the day to day running of a clinical practice.
LO6 Identify potential markets for future employment
LO7 Demonstrate a basic awareness of financial, practical and legal issues pertinent to self-employment and business start-up.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Placement
The work placement module will normally involve 475 Hours, split typically into 14 weeks of roughly 35 hours per week in appropriate clinical placement centres, and 15 hours of class on business development. Practical clinical experience is gained in: • Evaluation and diagnosis of neuromusculoskeletal injuries • The use of therapeutic modalities in the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal injuries. • Therapeutic exercise prescription and rehabilitation. On-site learning through observation, guided treatment, co-ordinated rehabilitation and progression to independent evaluation and rehabilitation of patient caseloads, under the supervision of an appointed clinical instructor.

Including preparing a business and marketing plan.

Including professional membership, professional and other insurances, registration of business and employer/employee obligations.
