Module Aim: The aim of this module is to enable the students to describe, identify and apply the basic principles of coaching and the coaching process at the Introductory Level of the FAI Coaching Ladder.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Plan and implement a structured coaching session for young players aged 6-12.
LO2 Successfully conduct coaching practices that demonstarte an understanding of the basic principles of coaching and the coaching process for this age group.
LO3 Identify areas for technical improvement for individual players within practices.
LO4 Design and implement practises appropriate to age of the players
LO5 Devise session planners for short term purposes.
LO6 Follow best practice guidelines when dealing with children in accordance with Irish Sports Council Code of Ethics
LO7 Select a notational analysis template and apply it in analysing a top level match.

Module Content & Assessment

Indicative Content
Kick Start 1: 8 contact hours, full attendance compulsory
• Plan, organise and implement a coaching session • Identify the stages in the development of young players at the FUNdamental phase aged 6-9 • Coach Children aged 6-9 in a fun, safe and friendly environment
Kick Start 2: 17 contact hours, full attendance compulsory (Students must have completed Kick Start 1)
• Identify stages in the development of young players at the learn to train phase • Plan, organise and implement coaching sessions • Adapt activities to develop soccer specific skills in players in the Learn to Train phase • Reinforce and progress the player’s soccer specific and FUNdamental movement skill’s in game related functions, progressing in to small sided games • Plan, implement and review sessions in a fun, safe and friendly environment
Small Sided Games Workshop: 3 contact hours, full attendance compulsory
• Promote the use of SSG practices in the training session • Understand the importance of development of children between the age of 7-9 rather than winning at all cost • Improve knowledge of the coaching styles used when working with 7-9 year old age group • Have a better understanding of the characteristics of the 7-9 year old football player
Irish Sports Council Child Protection in Sport Awareness Workshop: 3 contact hours, full attendance compulsory
• Implement best practice in protecting the welfare of participants • Create a child-centered environment within the sports club • List categories of abuse and some indicators associated with abuse • Make appropriate response to a disclosure • Make a report to designated person or appropriate Statutory Authorities
Football for all workshop: 3 contact hours, full attendance compulsory
• Understanding of the FAI Football for All programme • Awareness of opportunities within the game for different disability groups
Video Analysis workshop: 3 contact hours, full attendance compulsory
• Understanding of match analysis and its role in the modern game • Awareness of analysis techniques
Coaching Experience: Full attendance compulsory
• Coaching Placement 1: Four weeks coaching experience with 1st & 2nd Class students in Carlow Primary School’s • Coaching Placement 2: Four Week coaching experience with 3rd & 4th Class students in Carlow Primary School’s • Coaching Placement 3: 1 Day Coaching experience coaching within the FAI Football For All programme • Additional Placements: Primary Schools competitions, FAI Soccer Sisters
