Teaching & Learning Strategies: This module will be taught by lectures, class discussions, case studies, problem-solving exercises, project work and self-directed learning.
Module Aim: The aim of the module is to provide students with a clear understanding of the concepts, techniques, knowledge and skills required for the management of modern software projects.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 LO1: Evaluate the range of project management methodologies available and make an informed choice.
LO2 LO2: Apply leadership, motivation and decision-making skills. Understand the importance of people management, team dynamics, collaboration and communication.
LO3 LO3: Demonstrate understanding and familiarity with the process groups and knowledge areas of PMBOK as they relate specifically to software development projects.
LO4 LO4: Demonstrate a mastery of selected areas of PMBOK - developing cost estimates, preparing schedules, analysing and mitigating risk.
LO5 LO5: Evaluate the wide range of tools currently available and make informed choices.

Waterfall, Agile, Scrum, Kanban, XP, Six Sigma, Event Chain... Overview, suitability and popularity.
Project Management Skills
Leadership and motivational skills, decision-making, negotiation, problem-solving, stress management.
PMBOK Software Extension
Process groups and knowledge areas - Integration Management, Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Quality Management, Risk Management, Human Resource Management, Communication Management, Procurement Management and Stakeholder Management. Examination of all areas followed by detailed study of selected areas as follows.
Human Resources Management
Estimation, team formation, personality issues, team dynamics, people management.
Cost Management
Importance of metrication, cost estimation methods, model tuning, tracking costs.
Time Management
Work breakdown, task sequence, schedule, charts.
Risk Management
Identification, estimation, mitigation and monitoring of risk. Pareto 80:20 rule.
Tools
Overview of the wide range and fast-changing nature of tools - from Enhanced To-Do List apps, Task Management tools, Collaboration and Communication tools to full-blown Project Management tools. Examination of a representative sample in each category.
