Teaching & Learning Strategies: Formal lectures will be supplemented with case studies of sustainable food production as well as field trips to food producers engaged in the Origin Green Programme. Guest lectures from industry will be used to enhance the learning experience.
Module Aim: This module aims to build upon content delivered in Agricultural Sustainability 1. Students will explore sustainability within the wider food system as well as the sustainable food production from an international perspective.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Understand the role for sustainability in the food chain including the main drivers of sustainable food production
LO2 Be capable of critically assessing the sustainability of food production systems in Ireland compared to international competitors
LO3 Demonstrate a knowledge of legislation as it applies at farm level and how this helps improve the sustainability of Irish farm systems
LO4 Understand the role of the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine in providing oversight of food production in Ireland

Agri-food legislaton
The role of the EU in setting standards for sustainable food production. Understanding the link between EFSA, the Comission and Parlament at EU level in the creation of Ag-food legislation
The role of the Irish Government in sustainable food production
Understanding how food production legislation is enacted at Irish level and how the DAFM provides oversight to ensure sustainable food production at all levels in the food system.
