This module will be delivered in Semester 2 as two x 1 hour lectures per week and one x 2 hour practical per week. Mock prescriptions will be dispensed by students. Different types of prescriptions will be assessed for compliance with legislation and appropriateness for patients. Using the pharmacy computer systems will allow students to simulate day-to-day tasks in community pharmacy. Students will prepare claims for submission to HSE and PCRS
Teaching and learning will also take place in the placement pharmacy under the supervision of the pharmacist.
Tasks completed during placement hours which are included in Work Placement portfolio will form part of the assessment strategy.

Module Aim: |
Students will have gained the knowledge, skills and competencies required to work in a dispensary under the supervision of a pharmacist and will understand the different health schemes and forensic regulations related to pharmacy.
They will be able to control stock levels in pharmacy and deal with deliveries of stock and relevant paperwork.

concerns in collaboration with the pharmacist |

Recognise situations that fall beyond the scope of practice of pharmacy technicians and refer these
situations to the pharmacist while also accepting responsibility for referrals from the pharmacist |
LO3 |
Dispense and label medication, understand the use of medication, side effects, dose, interactions and be able to advise patient accordingly |
LO4 |
Understand the different health schemes and supply prescriptions accordingly, be able to submit claims to PCRS for processing and monitor payments received |
LO5 |
Select appropriate products by applying knowledge of brand and generic names, dosages, and
dosage forms, maintain appropriate stock levels and storage conditions. |

Theory
Students will learn about the theory behind:
Pharmaceutical Terminology, Dispensing Prescriptions and Health Schemes, Dispensary Stock, Classification and Storage of Medicines, Pharmacy Legislation, Pharmacy Records, Dispensing of medicines, Dispensary errors, Month End Routines and related paperwork

Practical
The knowledge gained in lectures will be applied in practical classes where students will learn how to dispense prescriptions, keep records in accordance with legislation, submit claims to the PCRS in a specially designed mocked up pharmacy available in house.

Work Placement
Students will focus on Regulations and Dispensing as part of their 200 hours placement. This will underpin the learning from the theory classes and enhance the skills developed during practical classes. This independent learning is essential to ensure that students develop the core competencies required for pharmacy technicians.
