Lectures / Tutorials / Seminars / Screening / Gallery visits & Student Presentations.Lectures will outline key theories and art practices using audio visual and interactive methods as appropriate. Finally in support of discussion students will be encouraged to reflect on set reading extracts for each class.
Module Aim:
This module aims to give students an expansive and comparative understanding of Visual Art and its discourses from the late 80s , 90s to the contemporary moment. The module will analyze the theoretical and discursive strategies which underpin and inform art practitioners through a wide and varied relationship to different media from specific disciplines such as sculpture, painting or moving image to expanded environments and multiple platforms. The course aims to contextualize contemporary Irish art in terms of wider discussions of globalization.
Subject aims: To give emphasis to the importance of critical research and discursive debate in contemporary visual art; To encourage students to make connections between their studio work and their historical critical studies; To equip the student with the necessary skills and conceptual awareness to research and execute academic assignments in a professional manner; To develop the individual student’s ability to express ideas through verbal form. The assessment of this subject is designed to enable students to demonstrate that they have acquired a broad understanding of key ideas and practices in contemporary art.

Art History
The subject content from this programme reflect a clear and related progression from 2nd yr. Semester 5 & 6 will present through lectures and seminars an overview of art practices and critical debates since the late 80s to the contemporary moment. The subject programme aims to situate these discussions by contextualising and relating art discourses to earlier key theoretical debates in the 20Th Century and current socio political discussions. Practices and debates covered: medium specificity and expanded practices; research led art practices; performative identities and theories of the subject; the artist as curator; art & globalization and post-colonial critiques and participatory practices.

Essay 3,000 words typed with illustrations or a combination of student presentation with essay, for example 80% for the essay and 20% for a presentation. There is also the possibility of making this assignment a problem based learning activity with groups of 8 students and trained tutors. Assessment for Problem Based approach will be based on a product process model including peer and self assessment in relation to the process.
