This module and development of an engineering report provides the learner with the opportunity to develop critical and independent thinking. Learners are provided with the opportunity to engage in self-motivated, independent research under the guidance of a supervisor. Suggestions for project topics may come from the learner; however, all projects will be recommended by the supervisor. The learner will be afforded the opportunity for regular, weekly meetings, either online or fact to face, with the supervisor to discuss progress; deal with any issues or problems which may arise in a timely fashion and ensure that the work is progressing to the satisfaction of learner and supervisor. A record will be kept of all learner/supervisor meetings.
At the beginning of the module the learner will be given a Project Brief, Grading Rubric and enrolled onto an 'Engineering Project' module on the IT Carlow Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard), this will provide support materials/links to resources and focus the learners activity. This module incorporates a specific workshop that will support learners on the development of a their engineering project proposal, applicable literature review, referencing, methodologies, design, test and data visualisation. Each completed Project will consist of 10,000 - 12,500 words. |

Identify, formulate, research, analyse and investigate a broadly-defined engineering problem, according to set criteria and using relevant data from codes, databases and literature, reach substantiated and valid conclusions. |

Design a solution to the identified engineering technology problem and contribute to the design of systems, components or processes, an artefact, to solve the problem with consideration for ethical, environmental as well as health and safety requirements |
LO3 |
Select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, as well as modern engineering and Information Technology (IT) tools, to solve the identified problem, with an understanding of their limitations. |
LO4 |
Communicate effectively on the solution artefact with the engineering and academic community as well as with society at large, by being able to comprehend and write effective reports, artefact design documentation and project logs, make effective presentations, as well as give and receive clear instructions. |

Module Content & Assessment
Indicative Content |
Project Brief
Learners will be assigned a project brief, which includes the project specification and target dates. The project brief will be discussed with each learner to ensure that it is clearly understood. Learners may propose their own brief, the suitability of which will be assessed by the project supervisors.

Project Management and Risk Assessment
Develop the skills to execute the project methodology through the identification and use of appropriate processes and tools such as project planning, scope of work, Gantt charts, scheduling risk assessment and data analysis in order to complete the project.

Progress Oral Presentation
Present an oral progress report on the work completed to date; this includes the problem identified, the solutions considered, the solution identified, timelines to completion as well as works already completed.

Project Design
Formulate the design of an artefact solution to the identified problem. This involves the identification selection of appropriate hardware and software, development of diagrams, schematics, flowcharts and the prototyping of potential solutions.

Project Reflective Journal
Maintain a log of all activity as well as reflections on that activity in a journal. This will include, but is not limited to, project ideas, meeting minutes, project/work activities, project management and risk assessment outputs such as mind-maps, Work Breakdown Structures, Scope of Works, and Gantt Charts.

Project Implementation
Development of the solution, through hardware, software and system development using appropriate tools to final assembly of the artefact.

Project Report
Produce a formal written report to include: Abstract, Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Artefact Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation, Discussion of Results, Conclusion, Recommendations and Future Work.

Final Oral Presentation
Present a final oral report on the completed work; this includes the problem identified, the solutions considered, the solution identified, the development of the artefact, results of testing, lessons learnt and potential future work.
