Teaching & Learning Strategies: • Lecture delivery – typically 4 hours per week • Class discussion • Tutorials • The key teaching & learning strategy is integration/’feeding-in’, through content, timing & shared summative assessment of Practice & Legislation instruction with Studio 5 projects, including integrated project assignments, to allow application of Practice & Legislation theory with formative feedback
Module Aim: The aims of this module are: • To further develop learners’ detailed and practical knowledge of the Building Regulations, particularly Parts B, K, L and M, so that they can incorporate these requirements into Studio 5 projects • To familiarize learners with the principles of Health & Safety and their implementation in the construction industry • To develop learners’ practical knowledge of the principles of Universal Design • To introduce learners to construction contracts and their administration • To introduce learners to Professionalism and Management, as defined by the RIAI Standard of Knowledge, Skill and Competence for Practice as an Architectural Technologist and CIAT Code of Conduct • To develop learners’ practical knowledge of construction costing
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Apply Building Regulations B, K, L and M to the detailed design of projects and demonstrate familiarity with the Building Control process
LO2 Prepare documentation for a Fire Safety Certificate and a Disability Access Certificate Application for a small to medium scale project
LO3 Demonstrate in outline how a Building Contract is administered and costed
LO4 Take an active part in the construction Health & Safety process
LO5 Demonstrate familiarity with the concepts of Professionalism and Management, as defined by the RIAI Standard of Knowledge, Skill and Competence for Practice as an Architectural Technologist and the CIAT Code of Conduct

• Review of Fire Safety Certificate Applications and Disability Access Certificate Applications • Comprehensive investigation of fire safety design and the practical application of TGD-B to the layout and detailed design of projects • Comprehensive investigation of the principles of Universal Design and its application to the layout and detailed design of buildings, including the application of TGD-M • The Building Contract: general principles and types of contract, RIAI in its various Forms, GCCC in its various Forms • Practical aspects of construction costing and cost control • Investigation of the RIAI Standard of Knowledge, Skill and Competence for Practice as an Architectural Technologist and CIAT Code of Conduct, particularly in relation to Professionalism and Management
