Module Aim: 1. To give students a greater understanding and knowledge of a range of important social issues and the corresponding theoretical concerns 2. To encourage students to reflect on social issues as they impact on young people, their families as well as other groups in Irish society 3. To help students develop confidence in discussing social issues

On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:

LO3 Discuss race and ethnicity in contempory society
LO4 Discuss the sociology of health and illness and its relationship to professional practice

Theories of Power
What is power ? Theories of power. Individuals, power and participation, distributions of power and privilage.
Race and Ethnicity
The concept of race and ethnicity majority- minority- relations,racism, race and ethnicity in a global context. The effects of prejudice, racism and discrimination.
Deviance and Social Control
Theories of deviance, crime and the criminal justice system. Victims and perpetratorators. Prisons and punishment.
The Body, Medicine, Health and Health Care
Why health is a social issues, theoretical perspectives on health and illness, the social basis of health, the sick Role, globalization and health. The sociology of disability.
Sociology of the Media
Media in a goldal age, theories of the media, audience and media representations representations. Influencnce and power of the media on everyday life.
