Teaching & Learning Strategies: This module will be delivered via a one-hour lecture and one two-hour practical per week. Students may access the material via Blackboard in advance of the class and practicals to encourage active learning. Students will be required to examine and discuss case histories in an interactive manner which will assist the student in developing lateral thinking skills and broaden their scope of practice. This style of learning will be carried out through group discussion and problem solving. The practical component will • allow students to develop the required practical competencies, attitudes and behaviours appropriate for managing a patient case. • develop a problem solving approach and be competent in selecting appropriate techniques for presenting patient cases • develop a methodological approach for progression of treatment • Promote enquiry based learning via investigation of a problem and planning treatment programmes. Case studies, journals and recommended texts will be incorporated and posted on blackboard as well as powerpoint presentations and practical cases on DVD and youtube
Module Aim: To progress the clinical reasoning of the students assessment and evaluation techniques. To identify neuromusculoskeletal impairments and facilitate the student to plan and implement appropriate articular manual interventions. To further develop the students clinical rationale in progression / modification of treatment where appropriate
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Understand the clinical rationale underpinning articular manual therapy. Demonstrate competency in selecting and implementing techniques appropriate to the presenting clinical scenario.
LO2 Demonstrate the ability to perform, in assessment and treatment, the appropriate and specific joint mobilization techniques and the clinical reasoning pathway that underpins their utility.
LO3 Demonstrate competency prioritising treatment selection based on the fundamentals and principles of the clinical reasoning process.
LO4 Demonstrate clinical competency in evaluating the effects of an imparted treatment technique and be able to progress or modify the treatment as appropriate.
LO5 Record comprehensive medical records for assessment and treatment
LO6 Demonstrate clear and concise patient instruction and education.

Theory/Practical 1.1
Appreciation, recognition and clinical implication of the value of the inflammatory healing process and appropriate timing for manual intervention techniques.
Theory/Practical 1.2
Competency in the identification and understanding of the guidelines for the use of and contraindications for manual therapy interventions.
Introduction to several frameworks for articular manual therapy application including i)Maitland approach ii)Combined movement theory iii)Mulligan approach iv) Neuropathic pain theory v)McKenzie approach. The above approaches will be integrated and taught via an enquiry based problem solving approach.
Theory/Practical 1.4
Problem centred / case based progression and modification of treatment with respect to the peripheral articulations and cervical, thoracic and Lumbar spinal presentations; progressing the clinical reasoning approach to treatment and management.
Theory/Practical 1.5
Documentation and upkeep of medical records – from assessment identification of patient centred problems, aims of treatment and short and long term goals of treatment. Develop a system of keeping problem orientated medical records and continuation notes in the Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan (SOAP) format

Practical/Skills Evaluation A practical viva exam where the student will be examined on the rationale and use of manual therapy including practical application of specific techniques with potential progressions / modifications. Group practical presentation work will also contribute to this method of assessment where the candidate will utilise the scientific principles that underpin the clinical reasoning of articular manual therapy and apply to patient cases. 1,2,3,4,5,6 70.00 Sem 1 End
