Teaching & Learning Strategies: Sessions will be set aside for close reading of texts involving full class participation. Video materials will be used to stimulate interest and vary the teaching methods. Students will also be taken on field trips of relevant interest(theatre, cultural centers, art museums). Mid-term quiz and end-of-term portfolio of materials (task sheets and essay)
Module Aim: The aim of this module is to introduce students to contemporaryn Irish literature and film from a cultural viewpoint. By analysing texts and film from different cultural and historical perspectives, students are encouraged to develop a critical approach to the literature. The module will consists of a series of seminars, where the following genres will be studied: the short story, the novel, drama, poetry, and film. Central themes in Irish literature such as politics, gender, and post-colonialism, will be explored against the historical and cultural background of twentieth-century Irish society. The module includes work by men and women writers, from both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Examine the complex relationships between political nationalism and culture in contemporary film and literature
LO2 Understand central questions about the relationship between politics and language, the nature and effects of propaganda and the varieties of revolution in Irish literary culture.
LO3 Apply various literary critical theories to a range of literary texts
LO4 Discuss the relation between the Irish present and the Irish past as represented in contemporary film and literature.
LO5 Analyse what kinds of narrative modern Ireland needs and wishes to construct about itself
LO6 Critically discuss questions of representation, with regard to Irish film and television, and Ireland as a subject matter
LO7 Understand the position of contemporary film and literature in a changing and globalising Media landscape.
LO8 Analyse the representative works of Irish poetry, as well as of contemporary literary theory and criticism
