Teaching & Learning Strategies: Sessions will be set aside for close reading of texts involving full class participation. Video materials will be used to stimulate interest and vary the teaching methods. Group Work, Oral Presentations, Making and Doing, Drama and Role play.
Module Aim: This module will enable students to understand environments that will provide children with a wide range of experiences in creative arts practices. Students will be enabled to plan and implement meaningful, integrated experiences in the visual arts, music, creative drama, and movement. They will examine picture books, fiction, drama, and poetry written for children and explore the theory, content, and practice of integrating the literary and performing arts into the learning environments. Emphasis is placed on aesthetic development of young children through picture books and poetry. Students will be immersed in the best of children’s literature and will gain a familiarity with contemporary children’s literature; with a sharpened ability to analyse and incorporate a literary text into a creative environment.

LO2 Demonstrate knowledge of the centrality of creative arts in education and recognize the right of the child to participate in cultural life and the arts.
LO3 Plan approaches and methodologies for an arts curriculum.
LO4 Develop child-centered creative responses to children’s literature.

What is creativity all about? The origins of creativity. The benefits of creativity. The social, educational and political context for creativity. The impact of creativity on early brain development.
Principles for creative curriculums.
The importance of the arts and creativity for children's learning, critical thinking, social interaction and self-regulation. Creating the conditions for creativity. Respecting and promoting the right of the child to participate fully in cultural and artistic life and encourage the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for cultural, artistic expression. Using different art forms in early years practice. Creative practices and pedagogies.
Selecting and Evaluating Children’s Literature
Overview of the Genres of Children’s Literature. Quality literature in each genre. Developing appreciation of children's literature. select books that represent the diverse populations evident in early years environments.
Eliciting meaningful and creative responses to children’s literature.
Adapting stories into a dramatic structure for young children. Devising and planning creative responses to children’s poetry & literature, music movement & art
