This module will be taught in 36 one hour theory classes and 12 one hour laboratory sessions. Lecturer-led interactions in addition to the discussion of case studies collected by students from their work placements. Students will practice analysing patients needs and conditions through interviews with lecturer and each other during the laboratory sessions.
Module Aim:
Student will have a knowledge of OTC preparations, be able to communicate with customer, be able select appropriate treatment options for minor conditions and be aware of when to refer to pharmacist or other appropriate health care professional.

Indicative Content
Theory:
The students will learn about the diagnosing and treatment of customers presenting in pharmacy requesting advice in areas such as
Pain Relief, Coughs/Colds, Smoking Cessation, Childhood Illnesses, Nutrition and Dietary supplements, Women’s Health, Oral Conditions, Gastric Conditions, Skin Conditions, Travel Medicine, Abuse of OTC Medicines or similar
Practical
The students will develop their communication skills, ability to select appropriate treatment options and be able to assess the need for referral when dealing with customers.
Work Placement
Students will focus on OTC as part of their 200 hours work placement. This will underpin the learning from the theory classes and enhance the skills developed during practical classes. This independent learning is essential for students to develop the core competencies required for pharmacy technicians
