Teaching & Learning Strategies: A variety of teaching & learning strategies will be used. Primarily class based lectures illustrated by case studies. Teaching will be complemented by direct learning based on projects. Appropriate site visits will also form part of the learning experience.
Module Aim: This module introduces students to a range of contemporary and historical Irish artists and designers whose work responds to site-specific locations, histories and cultures. It seeks to develop research skills, written and verbal articulacy and to encourage an environment of discussion and informed critical awareness inspired by place-based public art both in Ireland and internationally. The relationship between histories of landscape and histories of geographies are also contextualised in this module. Students are invited to consider how contemporary place-based artists address current socio-ecological issues today through their collaborations with urban, rural and marginalized communities.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate through writing and presentations an understanding of Irish Visual Art & Design movements.
LO2 Demonstrate an effective well researched independent visual analysis of an Irish work of art or design.
LO3 Demonstrate through writing, group discussion and presentation, a detailed understanding of the social, political and economic contexts in which art & design works, particularly public work, emerges.
LO4 Communicate an understanding of the role curators play in protecting and managing art and design work in the public realm through writing, group discussion and presentation.
LO5 Demonstrate an understanding of the significance of art and design to the tourism, heritage and public realm sectors in Ireland through presentation, group discussion and essay writing.

Indicative Content
An introduction to Site-specific and Public Art.
This module presents a comprehensive survey of key national and international artists who mediate culture and heritage through their creative practice. It will focus in particular on art that responds to site-specific locations, histories and cultures. It seeks to develop research skills, written and verbal articulacy and to encourage an environment of discussion and informed critical awareness inspired by place-based public art both in Ireland and abroad. This module encourages students to explore the ways in which site-specific and public art practices have contributed to the construction of identity and memory in the 20th and 21st Century. Students are also invited to consider how contemporary place-based artists address current socio-ecological issues through collaborations with urban, rural and marginalized communities.
