Teaching & Learning Strategies: The dissertation provides the student with the opportunity to develop critical and independent thinking. Students are directed by their supervisor who will encourage the development of the students’ self motivated independent research skills. Each student will be assigned a Dissertation Supervisor for the module. Each dissertation topic will be agreed upon after consultation between the student, the supervisor and the research team. The student and supervisor will meet up at regular intervals during the academic year to discuss progress, deal with any issues or problems which may arise, and ensure that the work is progressing satisfactorily. A record will be kept of all meetings between the student and the supervisor Each student will be given a hand-out at the commencement of the module which gives details on the requirements for the dissertation. Students will be required to attend a seminar on research methodologies (e.g. to include themes, framework, structure, questionnaire design, referencing etc.)
Module Aim: This is an inter-disciplinary subject which aims to consolidate and integrate the students’ knowledge, skills and competences across the range of subject areas. This subject will provide students with the opportunity to complete a major piece of research-based work. Students will produce a dissertation of approximately 10,000 to 12,000 words in length. The subject matter will reflect specific areas of interest to the student. The dissertation will thus have a practical element, and will reinforce educational/industrial linkages. The aims of the dissertation module are to provide students with the opportunity: • to apply the knowledge and skills learned on the course to the research of a cultural heritage related topic • to extend their existing knowledge, expertise and skills in their chosen topic; • to gain experience at managing a dissertation • to make contact with external bodies; • to develop written and verbal communication skills. • to demonstrate their ability to carry out an independent piece of research and development work

Dissertation
The total grades for this subject equates to 100% continuous assessment. The grades in whole are allocated to the thesis. Within the first two weeks of the course, students will decide, in consultation with course lecturers, on a title for their dissertation. Each student will be assigned a supervisor based on the interest of the student and each supervisor will supervise not more than four students. The supervisor will guide the student on a path of self-directed and self-motivated learning. The exact theme of dissertation will be a result of discussion and compromise between the student and the supervisor. The actual topic of research must be in line with the course content and problems related to the work experience of students will be considered. Each student should submit a dissertation together with an oral presentation of twenty minutes in front of an assessment panel. The students are expected to carry out a large amount of research both in house using online resources and externally whether using national repositories or on the ground primary.
