Module Aim: This module provides the learner with the practical skills required to produce reports and analytical studies that implement the theoretical and legislative aspects of the course and in the area of Heritage, natural and constructed and also conservation. The learner will also engage with the various forms of legislation that form part of the protection and management of our constructed and natural heritage and within the existing systems create, management plans and strategies that provide protection for natural and constructed heritage. Learners will engage with the following concepts: • Learners will produce research that investigates the concepts and theories that make places and landscapes culturally significant. • Learners will measure and record existing natural and constructed heritage sites. Through Photography, measured surveys, architectural drawing, model making and analytical reporting. • The learner will create reports, studies and research papers that engage with national strategies for conservation from a range of sources, the Department of Arts Heritage & the Gaeltacht, the National Sustainable Strategy 2006, the Planning & Development Acts 1963 and amendments to the present day, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Spatial Strategy, the National Development Plan and the Heritage Council. • Learners will refer to best international practice from Unesco (World Heritage Sites), the Council of Europe and the international charters of Venice Burra. Students will be introduced to the concepts of creating a management plan for the conservation of significant landscapes & buildings. Learners will be able to prepare and produce professional standard reports & present in a professional manner to their peers and other professionals.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Learners will produce research that investigates the concepts, histories and theories that make places and landscapes culturally significant, within the context of a management plan for the conservation or protection of the constructed and natural heritage. With reference to the Department of Arts Heritage & the Gaeltacht, the National Sustainable Strategy 2006, the Planning & Development Acts 1963 and amendments to the present day, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Spatial Strategy, the National Development Plan and the Heritage Council.
LO2 Learners will create and produce an existing conditions report/ survey report that measures and records an existing natural and constructed heritage site. The report will analyse the heritage site through photography, measured surveys, architectural drawing, model making and analytical reporting.
LO3 Learners will create reports that make reference to best international practice, Unesco (World Heritage Sites), the Council of Europe and the international charters of Venice & Burra.
LO4 Demonstrate an ability to create a heritage management plan that evaluates the concepts and relationships that exist between legislation and the management of the constructed and natural heritage for a given site, with reference to the national and an international context. The management plan will make reference to Department of Arts Heritage & the Gaeltacht, the National Sustainable Strategy 2006, the Planning & Development Acts 1963 and amendments to the present day, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Spatial Strategy, the National Development Plan and the Heritage Council.
LO5 Create and present a physical analytical management plan ready for physical and web publication. The management plan will contain strategies for the restoration and conservation of a constructed or natural heritage. Containing the following,: History/ research & recording the site; Recording of material and structural conditions; Protection, duty of care and retention of historical integrity; Conservation & repair; Legibility access & presentation.
LO6 Learners will prepare professional standard reports & present in a professional manner to their peers and other professionals in a public forum. Learners will keep a learning journal to reflect on personal learning.

Research & fact finding
Research & fact finding relating to the history, ancient and contemporary of sites, buildings, manmade and natural landscapes.
Conditions reports
Creation of existing conditions reports which accurately document the site. Through surveying, photography, architectural drawing and physical and CAD modelling.
Creation of a professional standard management plan
Creation of a professional standard management plan for an agreed constructed or natural landscape or heritage site. This will take reference from the best international practice models, in terms of analysis and theoretical concepts & with reference to national standards and agencies.
Publishing of a management plan
Publishing of a management plan that can be published as a physical fully referenced document and also a document that can be published online in a web publication.
Presentation of learners projects
The presentation of learners projects to demonstrate research findings and theoretical concepts to peers and invited guests.
Learning journal
Learners will keep a learning journal to reflect on learning process.
