Module Aim: This module provides the learner with an understanding of the issues pertaining to management and practice in relation to our built and natural heritage. The learner will also engage with the various forms of legislation that form part of the protection and management of our constructed and natural heritage. Learners will be introduced to the concepts that make places and landscapes culturally significant. The learner will engage with national strategies for conservation from a range of sources, the Department of Arts Heritage & the Gaeltacht, the National Sustainable Strategy 2006, the Planning & Development Acts 1963 and amendments to the present day, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Spatial Strategy, the National Development Plan and the Heritage Council. Learners will also be introduced to best international practice from Unesco (World Heritage Sites), The Council of Europe and the international charters of Venice and Burra. Students will be introduced to the concepts of creating a management plan for the conservation of significant landscapes & buildings. Learners will be able to prepare professional standard reports & present in a professional manner to their peers and other professionals.

On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate and explain the history and theory of the management of the constructed and natural heritage in a national context. With reference to the Department of Arts Heritage & the Gaeltacht, the National Sustainable Strategy 2006, the Planning & Development Acts 1963 and amendments to the present day, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Spatial Strategy, the National Development Plan and the Heritage Council.

LO5 Create and present an analytical management plan for the restoration and conservation of constructed and natural heritage. Containing the following, History/ research & recording the site. Recording of material and structural conditions. Protection, duty of care and retention of historical integrity. Conservation & repair. Legibility access & presentation. Learners will prepare professional standard reports & present in a professional manner to their peers and other professionals.
