Module Aim: To give students an understanding of compliance, safety, and law with respect to industrial settings. To discuss the major components of key Irish health and safety legislation. To apply the concepts of hazard identification, risk assessment, and controls to work situations.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 To recognise ergonomic, mechanical, chemical, and psychosocial hazards in the Irish workplace setting and make recommendations to mitigate the associated risks.
LO2 To explain the components of a safety management system and advise on the development of a safety management system for a low-risk business.
LO3 To understand the need and role of regulations and standards with industries.
LO4 Describe the responsibilities of the people at various levels of the organisation in regard to standards, regulation, compliance, and health and safety.

Health and Safety
Human Factors in safety, health and welfare in work Risk management Technical Safety and working safely. Health and safety legislation Environmental issues within health and safety practices
Standards and Regulation
Definition of Standards. The need and role of the standards within manufacturing and industry. Standards bodies within Ireland and the EU. The use of quality control systems within production environments. Overview of regulations within business and manufacturing environments.
Law and Ethics
Describe the responsibilities of the people at various levels of the organisation in regard to standards, regulation, compliance, and health and safety. Description of the laws surrounding health and safety. The rights of employees and employers and how these rights are enforced. Business ethics, ethics related to production and industrial environments.
