Teaching & Learning Strategies: The legislation relating to health and safety will be examined with learners required to demonstrate how this applies to the farm setting. Learners will hear from those that have been effected by farm related accidents and be required to preform a critical appraisal of a farm environment through the completion of a safety statement.
Module Aim: This module aims to reinforce the requirement for health and safety in the workplace, including the farm environment. Learners will develop critical evaluation skills to identify and appraise work place environment safety.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Comprehend the legal obligations encompassing the workplace environment as it applies at farm level.
LO2 Identify and evaluate categories of risk and propose alternative strategies to mitigate, reduce and/or eliminate risk within the workplace
LO3 Evaluate the implications of injury for the business from economic, physical and mental health perspectives

Within the context of the farm as a place of work the learner will gain appreciation of: -History of Workplace Health and Safety -Identification and Evaluation of Risks -Procedures for Working Alone -Manual Handling -Technologies and Strategies to Minimise and Avoid Risk and Injury -Recording/Reporting of Incidents and Near Misses -Enforcement and Audits, etc.
Fatalities/Injuries
Muscoskeletcal issues, Agrochemicals and Biological Hazards, Safety with Machinery, Safety with Livestock, Personal Health and Fitness, Mental Health, Child Safety, Dealing with Seasonality of Agriculture, etc.
