Indicative Content
Placement
The work placement will generally involve work in private enterprises, consultancy firms, government departments or non-governmental organisations in Ireland or abroad. The work placement can alternatively involve participation in an appropriate research project. Students who already have extensive and relevant work experience from third year of the programme may be exempt from the full work placement in fourth year on a case by case basis. The work placement will normally commence after the students have taken their final examinations i.e. early June of 4th year for a minimum of 12 weeks. Suitable work place experience of a similar duration if acquired between 3rd and 4th year may also be considered to fulfill this element of the course. The Careers Office at IT Carlow will be supported by the course board and placement coordinator to ensure that all students are placed in a relevant work environment. Members of the course board will monitor the students' progress throughout placement by maintaining contact with both the student and the supervisor in the host organisation. In an instance when a student is unable to take up an outside placement or under other exceptional circumstances the Department will provide an alternative desktop based assignment relating to general placement activities and tasks, This may include a comprehensive study on the organisational structure, mission, products, services and current and emerging trends relating to the company or organisation.
