Teaching & Learning Strategies: A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be used. Primarily class based lectures illustrated by case studies. Teaching will be complemented by directed learning based on continuing assessment projects. Appropriate site visits will also form part of the learning experience.
Module Aim: To equip learners with the knowledge, skill and competence to facilitate an understanding and appreciation of Irish natural and landscape heritage, using a variety of research methodologies.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Evaluate a range of current issues in relation to sustainable heritage conservation.
LO2 Outline Ireland’s archaeological heritage and its UNESCO World Heritage sites.
LO3 Describe significant natural and physical features of Ireland and explain the history and current status of the Irish agriculture, forestry and maritime resources.
LO4 Create an information bank on likely topics of interest to the tourism sector.

Indicative Content
Geology:
Rock formation in Ireland and its landscape effect on built heritage, agriculture and industry.
Physical Geography:
The significance of landscape features such as mountain ranges, rivers, bog and coastline. Glaciation, erosion and anthropogenic landscape formation.
Archaeology:
First settlement and the introduction of farming to Ireland. The introduction of metallurgy and christianity. Settlement and urbanisation of the medieval period.
Protection and Communication:
How natural heritage and landscape are legally protected in Ireland. National Legislation and the National Landscape Strategy. How we record and preserve this evolving resource. How we communicate the significance of our landscape to a broad audience.
