Module Aim:
The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of current social issues facing young people and situate this in the context of research evidence and theoretical/conceptual ideas.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:

Identify and understand relevant social issues that impact on the lives of young people

Demonstrate an understanding of how young people's experiences can be shaped by social circumstances and forms of wider social change

Analyse and make use of research evidence relating to the social experiences of young people

Show an ability to make use of relevant theoretical and conceptual ideas relating to the lives of young people

Identify ways in which empirical evidence and theory can be related to aspects of youth work practice

An introduction to contemporary theoretical perspectives on youth; specifically relating to issues of social change and inequality
Education and Post-School Transitions
The experiences of young people in education and their post-school transitions (e.g. further education & employment)
Youth Culture and Identities
The role of culture and consumption in shaping youth identities; with particular reference to post-subcultural debates
Crime, Deviance and Youth Justice
Exploring empirical evidence and theoretical ideas on youth crime; and societal and policy responses
Addiction and Substance Use
Examining forms of substance use amongst young people with reference to relevant empirical evidence and theoretical debates
Mental Health and Well-being
The significance of mental health and well-being in the lives of young people within sociological perspectives
Family Life and Gender
Situating the role of young people within sociological literature on family life; and examining the forms of social reproduction and change in gender roles/experiences
