Module Aim: |
This module introduces students to the basic concepts of sports development and the various roles within the sports development profession. Sports development within the community is about ensuring appropriate pathways and structures are in place to enable people to learn basic movement skills, participate in the sports and physical activities of their choice, whether they are within mainstream society, within disability, special population or minority groups. Sport and physical activity initiatives are increasingly recognised as powerful tools for achieving non-sports policy. Students will study various sports development initiatives and approaches using case studies and exemplars of national and International best practice |
Learning Outcomes |
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to: |
LO1 |
Demonstrate an understanding of the definitions, ideologies, theories, classifications, policies and practices underpinning sport, physical activity, sports inclusion and sport development in a community context. |
LO2 |
Critically assess the sports development process, delivery system, infrastructure of community based sport and demonstrate an understanding of the roles of Sports Development Officers in their various forms |
LO3 |
Critically reflect on community sport interventions and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of community sport development programmes and movements in Ireland and internationally. |
