Teaching & Learning Strategies: Lectures - communication of knowledge and ideas from the lecturer to the student. Problem Solving Exercises - student will work as part of a team and will work together to resolve various legal scenarios. Class Discussion/Debate - Students will be encouraged to actively participate in the class sessions which will develop their analytical and communication skills. E-Learning - The module will be supported with on-line learning materials. Self-Direct Independent Learning - the emphasis on independent learning will develop a strong and autonomous work and learning practices.
Module Aim: The overall aim of this course is to introduce students to the Irish Legal System and Irish Business law through a series of lectures and group discussions involving problem solving.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner should be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate understanding of the general legal environment in which business is carried out.
LO2 Demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the key principles of contract law (including contracts for the sale of goods and supply of services) and to apply this knowledge to business situations.
LO3 Comprehend the importance of employment law and data protection law and their application to the modern business environment.
LO4 Understand the key concepts of tort law and their application to business scenarios.
LO5 Demonstrate an increased awareness and insight of how the law influences decision making in a business context.

Introduction to Law and the Irish Legal System (15%)
• Nature, sources and classification of Irish law. o The Irish Constitution - Separation of powers and fundamental rights o Legislation and the legislative process o Common Law and the Doctrine of Precedent o European Union Law - Primary and Secondary Sources - Role of EU Institutions • The Irish Court System – Structure and Jurisdiction • Personnel of the Law
Introduction to the Law of Torts (20%)
• The Nature of Tort. • Causation and Remoteness • Negligence and Contributory Negligence • Vicarious Liability • Product Liability • Occupier’s Liability • Defamation • Defences
The Law of Contract (30%)
• The nature and formation of a contract. • Agreement, intention and consideration. • Form of a Contract. • Terms and exemption clauses. • Capacity to contract. • Invalid contracts • Discharge of contract and remedies for breach • Electronic Contracts
Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Law (10%)
• Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 o Main Implied Terms o Effectiveness of Exclusion Clauses • Consumer Protection legislation o Main Features o Role of Competition and Consumer Protection Commission
Introduction to Employment Law (15%)
• Contracts of employment – Formation and Terms • Duties of employer and employee. • Protective legislation (maternity leave, parental leave, etc) • Health & Safety Legislation • Employment Equality Legislation • Termination of employment contracts (including unfair dismissal and entitlements on redundancy) • Remedies for breach. Role of the Workplace Relations Commission
